Ruby Red Grapefruit

Mixed Media on reclaimed metal
Signed and Dated Houston 2017
18"

This piece is created from Hurricane Harvey flood debris. When I spoke with the home owner, they said they were given a two hour warning that the bayou across the street was going to flood its banks because a reservoir was going to release water.

They frantically carried everything they could to the second floor, before abandoning their home and taking shelter on the third floor of a nearby parking garage. Their neighbor called and told them the water was rising and they needed to get out of the area. They waded through chest high waters carrying their little dog to escape.

Each of the works created by the artist while in Houston focuses and celebrates something particular to Texas, rather than memorialize the storm and its effects.

The Ruby Red Grapefruit is the state fruit. It has a long history here, and is one of the only fruits to be granted a patent. There are a few varieties, but if you get it from Texas, it will be Ruby Red.

100% of the profit (minus shipping) will be donated directly to people recovering from Hurricane Harvey.
