Rhinestone necklace handmade from antique butterfly piece fine chain 15-18 Pat2
The rhinestone piece I used to create a pendant was originally the focal part of an antique necklace - very fine, with very short rhinestone cup chain (ladies were small way back when, including their necks!) and had too much damage to salvage. I carefully separated this rigid piece from the neck part and discovered it looks sort of like a butterfly. It is 1 3/4 inch wide at the top and two inches long to the very bottom dangling stone. The butterfly shape part is rigid, and there are seven dangling strands of rhinestones at the bottom.
Each rhinestone is teeny-tiny, maybe 1/16 inch in size and all, ALL, including the ones on the rigid part are prong set. In addition to this mark of fine jewelry, the back is a work of art - rigidity is explained by the fact that the rhinestone cups are neatly and professionally soldered together. Wow what a piece!
It is so dainty - can you imagine it hanging from the neckline of a red velvet dress in an 1890s saloon, the girl on a swing with a feather boa? Or, it could be a bit later, and it adorned a flapper with Buster Brown haircut and fringed dress.....
I didn't want to do much to it, like adding jump rings or anything too modern looking, so I ended up threading a fine sterling chain through the wings at the top center. The chain is dainty and twisted and about the the same color. It, too is recycled/upcycled and at 15 inches I felt it was a bit short so I added a 3 1/2 inch extender chain with lobster claw. it can still be worn at the 15 inch length.
p.s. it would nice on a black satin ribbon or even black velvet.
